Genetics
Develop and use a model to show that sexually reproducing organisms have two of each chromosome in their cell nuclei, and hence two variants (alleles) of each gene that can be the same or different from each other, with one random assortment of each chromosome passed down to offspring from both parents.
-
Phenotype - observable traits, such as height, eye color, and blood type
-
When we did the bothead example in class, we had our geno types which were consisted of uppercase and lowercase letters. Most of the genes of the grandparents have been passed down to the grand kids making them look the same, and have almost the same genes.
-
This is an example of a punnett square. A punnett square is a little chart that can help predict possibilities that can come from breeding. It can contain 1 or 2 dominants, depending on what organisms bred.
Communicate through writing and in diagrams that chromosomes contain many distinct genes and that each gene holds the instructions for the production of specific proteins, which in turn affects the traits of an individual.
Genes - the basic physical and functional unit of heredity, in a specific location in a chromosome.
Protein - large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body
-
-
Develop and use a model to describe that structural changes to genes (mutations) may or may not result in changes to proteins, and if there are changes to proteins there may be harmful, beneficial, or neutral changes to traits.
-
-
In our genes, we have our encyclopedias which store all of our information. But, when multiple mutations occur, almost our whole encyclopedias can be affected and changed. Some mutations that can occur can change your blood type, and could have a chance of diseases forming because of the mutations.
Construct an argument based on evidence for how environmental and genetic factors influence the growth of organisms.
Environmental factors
-
Increase in socialization can cause you to be more outgoing, and confident.
-
-
In my opinion environment influences growth more because with exercise you can help yourself become skinnier, more muscular, along with feeling and looking better. Another environmental factor is eating nutritious foods can also help with mental health, and physical health.
Communicate information about artificial selection / the ways humans have changed the inheritance of desired traits in organisms.
Screencastify project - My project explained the insensitivity to pain gene and how this changes humans traits.
Glow Gene from Mosa Mack - This is a gene inserted into the DNA of chickens which makes them glow in low light levels.
-
Construct an argument based on evidence for how asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Compare and contrast advantages and disadvantages of asexual and sexual reproduction.
-
-
Use a model to describe the process of natural selection, in which genetic variations of some traits in a population increase some individuals' likelihood of surviving and reproducing in a changing environment. Provide evidence that natural selections occur over many generations.
