A child's learning and socialization are more influenced by their family since the family is the child's primary social group
During the time with family a child's development happens physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually
Single-Parent Families
More than 35% of children in the US lived in a single-parent household in 2015 and numbers are increasing
This type of family can happen by choice or by life circumstances such as divorce or death
Never use the term "broken home", family is family no matter what the circumstances are
Blended and Extended Families
A family that has members from two or more previous families
Some are in a household where grandparents, aunts, uncles etc have major roles in their care
Let it be known to all children that their family members are important and know that people that play a major role in a child's life will help you better understand who they are as a person
It is normal to have different memebers in your family, not every family is the same
Biracial / Multicultural Families
Includes family members whose ethnic and cultural identities and/or radicalized identities differ from each other
It doesn't have to be blood family that makes up a biracial family
Adopting children whose ethnic or racialzied indemnity differ from theirs
Important to not use "half and half" when referring to a childs mixed race

Earliest relationship through family children learn to view themselves and others

Make up house rules together
Listen to each other and let family express their feelings
Have family meetings

Let the child talk about their feelings about their family, get to know their family by asking them questions
Don't assume or judge before you get to know the family and child
Family can also include friends or pets
Some children can be raised by their friends parents and they are considered family to that child
Be more compassionate and never judge someone's life
