A Struggling Art Student

Identification of Signs/Symptoms (Henry-Patt & Davis, 2021)
DISENGAGED IN WORK
Refuses to participate
Stops participating mid-project
Participates Slowly
Creates project unrelated to assignment
ASK: Does the student understand the assignment? Did something trigger them physically or emotionally? Do they have an unknown impairment? Do they dislike the material or the project? Is it offensive to their belief system?
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS
Unsafe with art supplies
ASK: Is the student self sabotaging due to fear of project? Is there an impulse control issue?
Inappropriate Language/Blurting Out
ASK: Does the student need attention? Can you set an individual goal? Assign a task/job?
Wandering classroom
ASK: Does the student need a mind/body break? An art break?
Helping Approaches
Prepare a back-up art assignment
Check-in with the whole class for comprehension of assignment
Do private/quiet individual check-ins
Present project in a variety of ways: visual, verbal, demo, video if applicable/time allowed (Danelle, 2013) "Demo, Repeat, Experiment & Build..."
Leave directions & project sample on board during class
Reward good behaviors of class & of individual goals set with identified students
Remind Class of Expectations & Art Room Rules
Assign Jobs/Tasks
Late End of Day classes: Use mindfulness/body and brain breaks
Allow Art Breaks
Remind Students Art is a Way for students of all (dis)/abilities to participate at any level (NCLD, 2009)
