In "Mediation", Williams traces one of the original senses of the word back to Chaucer's use as "interceding between adversaries", or mediating dialogue, communication, and reconciliation. This meaning is still relatively common and is also, to a degree, polysemous with its other sense of translating meanings between forms (in essence, that's one way of describing all communication- converting meaning into forms that can be understood by all participants in conversation)
