Education Curriculum Inclusivity and Diversity
Root Causes
Eurocentrism
The education system continues to be based on the eurocentric point of view. Our society consistently surrounds this idea and it is embedded in the curriculum that is taught in schools across the country. (Washington)
Source
Textbooks
The textbooks used by students are often outdated and contain whitewashed depictions of history. Also, the majority of these books are authored by white men which feeds into a singular, noninclusive narrative. (Ddamulira)

Teacher Training
While classrooms are becoming more diverse and students come into the classrooms with a more sophisticated view of the world, the training teachers receive does not account for that. For our curriculum to become more advanced, our teachers need to undergo adequate training to keep up with the progression of the classroom. (Lynch)

Budget
The budget the education system receives plays a major role in the advancement of the curriculum. Without sufficient funding, there are not enough resources to support the change of the education system. (Lynch)

Example
The Collegeboard has attempted to remove non-European history from their courses, primarily AP World History, which leads to the erasure and undermining of many minorities' cultures and experiences. (Washington)

Effects
Eurocentrism
Eurocentrism affects the education curriculum as it prioritizes and uplifts the white narrative and shadows the struggles and stories of other races. (Washington)

Textbooks
With the lack of diversity in the books students learn from, students are unable to learn and become aware of current or past issues surrounding other ethnicities. (Ddamurila)

Teacher Training
The lack of progressive and open-minded training teachers receive lead to close-ended class discussions led by teachers who are taught to uplift one point of view. (Lynch)

Budget
The fate of the education system heavily relies on the budget. The current budget is unable to supply funds to modifying and making the curriculum more progressive. (Lynch)

Example

Safe Learning Environments
To begin the advancement of the education system, a step that is necessary to take is addressing the bullying and harassment aimed at marginalized groups and highlighting intersectionality. Also, reforming the curriculum by including the contributions of POC in areas like STEM can help students feel represented and seen. (Mills)

Example

CST Connections
Effect
The effects of the lack of education diversity violate the CST of Solidarity. When students are taught a singular point of view out of thousands, they become unaware of others' situations and stories.
Solution
The CST of Call to Family, Community, and Participation is beneficial to solving the education curriculum crisis as it pushes towards the inclusivity of our neighbor and their stories. By helping the voices of the people in our community be heard, a more diverse and welcoming community is created for all.
Cause
The root causes of this issue show the absence of Life and Dignity of a Human person. Without listening and sharing the culture and experiences of others, the life of a human person is invalidated and silenced.
