Key performance indicators
Physiological
Stamina- fullbacks have to both provide an attacking option playing off my winger however it is also a defensive position so you have to be able to go forward and back high requires stamina
Strength-strength can be used when looking to stop week off opposition from getting past you, even if they have a speed advantage.
Power-similar to speed but explosiveness is required in many scenarios such as when you have been beat and have to make a last ditch tackle
Reaction time-Reaction time is mandatory for a fallback to have as sometimes they may not be able to anticipate passes and runs that may occur and that it is down to the reaction time to make an appropriate decision to whatever is going on.
Speed- this is required as a lot of the time as a fullback you will find yourself being run at by wingers making penetrative runs in behind and also trying to take you on
Jumping- when defending a corner alot if the time it is the responsibility of the full back to mark the front post and generally heading the ball is a big part of the game of a fullback. Thus having the ability to jump makes heading the ball much easier to win aerial duels.
Tactical
Certain teams will not rely on the crossing of a fullback quite as much as others and as a fullback it is often easy to rself in a situation in which you want to cross when it’s not really on
Forcing offside- a lot of the time you will be one of the higher defenders and knowing when to tell the rest of the defence to step up in order to impose an offside trap
Communication- a lot of the time you will find yourself in situations where if you do not effectively communicate with your winger areas may become congested
Inverting yourself- as a fullback there are many times in which you would find yourself having to drift inside in order to fill in for the position of a midfielder as seen in the role zinchenko plays for arsenal in the 22/23 season
Anticipation- if a fullback only reacts to balls that get played they are likely to struggle heavily as the ball moves faster than players and also wingers are often some of the fastest players on the pitch and so most of their runs in behind must be anticipated
Psychological
Motivation-in a game, there will be times often in which your mess ups as a defender lead to a goal. It is then easy to feel a lack of motivation as you have a messed up however, you must maintain your motivation as diminishing motivation is likely to lead to diminishing performance.
Concentration-in a football game that will be a lot of just going on that isn’t actually relevant to what you need to do. So having the selective concentration to concentrate on only those things you need to concentrate such as the winger you are defending is very important.
Body language-As a fallback, it is common for winger to beat however, once you have been beat in you next possession you have to,defend do you show any fear in how you approach the possession or do you maintain the same levels of confidence when defending
Going up for headers when defending against taller attackers-even if you are confident in your ability to jump a lot of the time, it may be intimidating to go out for headers against bigger players.
Technical
Interceptions- this is also very important, as a lot of the time as a fallback, you’re not having to stand up your mind, but instead having to intercept a pass that is in their direction.
Running with the ball-A lot of the time as a fullback, you will be the player that makes the transition from the sense to attack and those having the ability to run with the ball is integral
Tackle- this is arguably the most important technical aspect to a fullback and is needed in order to stop any opposition that tries to run towards you
Long passing- long passing is a skill that can be found in the arsenal of many elite full backs.it can be used in a variety of scenarios from starting A counter attack to a defensive clearance
short pass- This is one of the most commonly used skills in the game of football and is very commonly used by fullbacks in many scenarios such as link up play with midfielder and wingers.
Crossing-crossing is very much one of the most essential parts of the game of a fullback as u find yourself in a wide position and the most effective way of creating a threat from such a position is a cross.
