Ways to assist a student in my classroom?
- Gather data re: is the child and EAL student? Is the child in need to speech therapy? Is the child in need to more time to complete or understand a task? Can this child benefit from small group activities or would it be better as a one-to-one assitance?
-if an EAL student see if we can use the home language to help (find a student or teacher who speaks the same language)
- Use google translate
- Invite the child to draw their thoughts, feelings and ideas
If the child is in need of speech assistance, invite speech therapist to spend sometime with the child to asses and give us teacher pointers on how we can help the child in the classroom before having to refer to seek speech services
If the child needs more assistance on completing a task or understanding the lesson - set up a one-to-one time or small group to help spend more time working on understand the lesson. Bring in visuals, introduce manipulatives etc
