Set before WW1 and WW2
Women were fighting for the right to vote
Edwardian society.
Big division between the classes
People came together in the wars,but after that it went back to the way it was before.
Mr Birling
Refuses to take responsibility for what he did to Eva Smith (dismissing her after wanting a fair pay rise).
Starts the chain of negative events that happen to Eva Smith.
Mr Birling is a caplatist, where he believes that everyone works for one person.
Social responsibilty
The Inspector Goole believes in social responsibility.
Where everyone in a community looks after each other.
The Inspector is used as a mouthpiece for Priestley's views.

generation
Older generation ( Mr and Mrs Birling, and Gerald), refuse to take responsibility for what happened to Eva Smith.
Younger generation (Eric and Sheila), changed after they realised what they did wrong.
