Management by Objectives
With the End in Mind
Concept
Management by objectives or management by results is a theory that was born in the 1950s. With this theory, objectives began to be considered as the most important thing when managing: The objectives are the most important thing and not the means to achieve them.
Before Management by Objectives, organizations focused on the media. They cared about using the right form, staying on budget, using the right materials, doing the right thing, doing the right thing. But they didn't always care about doing the right things
Management by Objectives recommends managers to manage focused on objectives. But we shouldn't completely forget about the media either. There is a balance to be struck between goals and means.
Know well what you want
An objective is something that you want to achieve. Anything we want to achieve or obtain is a goal.
Practical Requirements
-
-
• Flexible. If there are major changes in the environment (which can affect the plan), they must be able to adapt, in due measure.
-
• Be justified. The reason why they are so must be understood. (for example, that it coincides with the organization's policy and with the objectives of their superiors).
-
-
-
-
-
• Quantified and measurable. In the end, the objectives must be perfectly explained in the plan, so the way in which this is done is of vital importance in order to be effective.
An Ideal Goal
Needs
-
• What to do (achieve), when and how.
-
-
• Establish the formula or measurement mechanism to assess the degree of fulfillment of the objective. Very especially if it is going to be associated with some type of evaluation or remuneration

Tasks
To achieve a goal there are many things that can be done. These things are the tasks we can do. When we make a list of tasks we must choose, these are things that have to be done and are the ones that must be done to reach the goal that has been set.
The group
Some tasks can be done individually, however, there are others that need to be done in a group. Each member of the group must be in charge of certain tasks in particular; It can be one for each or one for every two people. Everyone will have their tasks and will be responsible for them. The coordinator or manager will have to monitor the status of each task.
The resources
To carry out each task and to achieve all the proposed objectives, you need resources. A work team is not enough. They can be grouped like this: time, money and physical resources.
Before you try to do something, get the resources you need to do it. If he does not achieve them, the tasks will have to be changed, in such a way that he can carry them out with the resources he does have. As each member was distributed tasks, they must also be distributed the necessary resources.
Member Participation
A very important point for Management by Objectives is the participation of the members of an organization. People prefer to do something that they have decided themselves or in whose decision they have participated, instead of doing things that are imposed.
Si para la Administración por Objetivos lo más importante son los objetivos, hay que darle participación a los miembros de un equipo en la decisión sobre los objetivos a alcanzar.
