Documents to investigate education
Practical issues
Public documents are easily accessible
They are also cost effective
They are also time effective
Personal documents are harder to access
Hay 1997 did an experiment with girls passing around notes in class and they were very hard to obtain as they were experts at keeping them hidden from the teachers
Reliability
Public documents, registers, are produced in a systematic format
Lobban examined 179 stories from 6 school reading schemes looking for gender stereotyping
Validity
High in validity
Hey found that the notes offered a valuable insight into the nature of girls friendships
All documents are different and they can be interpreted differently therefor Hey may have interpreted the notes differently to the girls
Representativeness
Personal documents are less representative
Some official documents are legally required of all schools such as records of racist incidents
Hey collected 70 notes which makes her study unrepresentative as it’s not many in the scheme of things
Ethical issues
Consent
Confidentiality also may be an issue
