Current star in the field is Marie Stopes. The greatest accomplishment she has is popularizing the importance of birth control and use of contraceptives and Stopes’ simple, concise advice helped countless women worldwide control their own fertility. The difficulty she had to overcome was sued Catholic doctor Halliday Sutherland for libel. She lost, won at appeal and then lost again in the House of Lords, but the case generated huge publicity for Stopes views. Stopes continued to campaign for women to have better access to birth control.
