- - - - Muslim nobles, leaders and Mollas and Maulavis viewed the English with distrust - they refused to learn English or adopt modern Western education. They believed this education would pollute true Islam.
        
        As a result, Indian Muslims ended up being backward and superstitious in comparison to the Hindus but the Muslims remained undeterred - they said the Quran did not recommend English education. Sir Syed Ahmed pushed Muslims to adopt Western education. He argued that the Quran never prohibits English education and only the true text and not any commentaries should be trusted.
        
        He believed that if Muslims did not educate themselves, there would be a day soon when the English-educated Hindus would dominate.
        
        He founded an English school at Ghazipore in 1874 and the Aligarh Scientific Society. He also founded the most famous Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in 1875. This college became the centre of the Aligarh Movement and spread Muslim separatism in India.
        
        He also pleaded for social reform and modernisation of the Muslim society. He condemned fakirs for their mysticism and supernaturalism. He published a book Commentaries on the Koran in which he pushed people to interpret the Quran in light of science and rationality.
        
        He denounced Muslim polygamy, talaq on any pretext, and promoted education of women and abolition of purdah. He promoted these views in his journal Tahajibul Akhalakh.
