Diseases and Defects
Natural Defects
Knots
A knot forms when a branch meets the trunk
Knots are either a part of the wood (live) or loose (dead)
All Knots weaken the strength of the wood
Natural Defects occur as the tree grows
Some can be attractive when incorporated into projects
Resin Pocket
the grain in softwoods contains open chambers of resin
when the chamber are cut into the resin chambers are exposed
This weakens the wood and spoils the appearance
Shakes
These splits in the trunk (end grain) of wood take different forms
These shakes are caused by tension forces as the tree grows (fibres being pulled apart)
Radial Shakes
Heart Shake
Star Shake
Tangential Shakes
Occur along the annual rings (growth rings)
Artificial Defects
A defect caused by human error
Insect Attack
Fungal Attack
