Persepolis and Paradise of the Blind
Coming of Age
Growing up (with/without family)
Having to live by themselves and raise themselves
Becoming an adult and learning from childhood mistakes/experiences
Identity
Going on journeys of self discovery
Finding their identity (without anyone's help)
Marji did more experimenting in her youth to find her identity (punk, hiding her past, embracing her identity)
War (living in a warring/post war country)
Traumatic experiences (living in poverty, living in a revolutionist time where freedom was not an option for most)
Living conditions were terrible in both countries as the MCs were deprived of a lot of normal experiences
It shaped their adult life (learning from experiences, being surprised by other cultures, etc.)
Traditional Values and Beliefs
Hang was raised on traditional values while the Fundamentalists try to push the traditional values onto Marji
Marji's friends were all still traditionalists
Both MCs are quite against traditional values nor do they have traditional beliefs. It is always the elders forcing these on them.
Importance of Family and Love
Separated from family at a young age
Once separated, they both miss their families
Hang is reminded constantly of familial love and its importance
Marji knows the importance of family but her story revolves around other people and her (once she goes to Austria)
Hang had a good turned bad relationship with her mother which negatively impacted her. Them reuniting at the end was wholesome, but Hang had changed because of her circumstances.
Marji already had a good relationship with her parents so them reuniting was more heartfelt and positive.
Hang was constantly reminded of the importance of family
