Noun
Functionally, name persons, places, objects, and ideas
(both concrete and abstract, common and proper)
Syntactically, appear in subject and object positions in sentences: as subjects, subject complements, direct objects, indirect objects, object compliments, objects of prepositions
Inflectionally, they can be marked for number, possession, and determinacy.
Pronouns
Functionally, stand in for or refer to nouns (usually
but not always identified in “antecedents”).
Syntactically, appear as nouns (subjects/objects) and
as adjectives (before nouns, after linking verbs)
Inflectionally, usually marked for case (role in
sentence).
verbs
Functionally, name actions and states of being.
Syntactically, appear (in most cases) after nouns
Inflectionally, marked for tense (time frame) and in
some cases number (singular/plural)
Preposition
Functionally, name connections between (mainly)
physical objects
Syntactically, precede nouns that function as their
objects
Don’t carry inflections.
Adjectives
Functionally, modify nouns and answer questions like
which one, what kind of, and how many
Syntactically, precede nouns and follow linking verbs
Inflectionally, can be marked as comparative (-er) or
superlative (-est)
Adverbs
Functionality, modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs, answering such questions as when, how, why, under what circumstances, and to what degree
Syntactically, appear most anywhere
Inflectionally, can be marked as comparative (using more or
sometimes -er) or superlative (using most or sometimes -est)
Conjunctions
Functionally, connect grammatically equal elements
(often but not always independent clauses)
Syntactically, appear between grammatically equal
elements
Carry no inflections
