Sampling methods
Random: All members of the target population (group researchers want to study) have an equal chance of being selected
Advantages: Should create representative sample, easiest to carry out
-
-
Opportunity: The researcher goes to the place they would like to conduct the study and asks people there if they would like to participate.
-
Disadvantages: Sample may not be representative, demand characteristics might happen
Snowball: Researchers find one participant and ask them to ask their friends and family to take part in the experiment. The people the participant recommends will then be asked to find more.
Disadvantages: Most time-consuming, participants may be very similar
Advantages: Researchers don't have to spend money looking for participants, can create a very large sample
Experimental Design
Independent measure: Participants are split into groups and each group experiences a different condition of the IV.
-
Matched pairs: Participants are split into two groups, with the aim of matching variables in groups (e.g.: both groups might have an 18-year-old man, 56-year-old woman and 7-year-old child.) Testing may be done beforehand to help match up variables.
