EXPERIMENTAL METHOD

-
Types of validity
Internal – the extent to which a procedure is measuring what it was intended to measure (is the change in the DV the result of the IV or something else?)
-
Internal validity
-
Demand characteristics: if participants are unsure of what to do they will seek cues on how to behave and this will affect their behaviour

-
External validity
Different people or populations (population validity)
Different times e.g. 1950s or 1990s (temporal validity)
External validity is enhanced through replication – if we can repeat and get the same results it has high external validity
Different places or settings: Ecological validity: can the results be generalised from the conditions in the study to other conditions
Key terms
-
-
-
Quasi-Experiment: not a true experiment, the IV occurs naturally and cannot be manipulated
