Solidarnosc (Solidarity)
Shipyard workers formed an illegal trade union called Solidarnosc. They voted unemployed electrician Lech Walesa as their leader.
Concessions: Government agreed to sign agreement which stated there should be free trade unions, freedom of information, access to media and civil rights.

Truth started being talked about, taught in classrooms and newspapers criticising the government.

EVENTS
February 1981 Prime Minister of Poland resigns and General Jaruzelski tales over. Jaruzelski and Walesa form a "government of national understanding" which breaks down after 9 months due to tense relationship.

American Reaction: Imposed economic sanctions on Poland 1981 after martial law, inflation reached 70% and the currency was devalued twice, opposition began to reappear.
November 1982 Walesa released but solidarity remained illegal. 1983 Walesa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

July 1980 meat priced increased by 10%. 14th August more than 17,000 workers walked out of the Lenin Shipyard in Gdansk.
