Respiratory System - Coggle Diagram
Respiratory System
Disorders of the respiratory system
COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder interludes chronic bronchitis emphysema and asthema
Tuberculosis
Bacteria infection in the respiratory system caused by mycobacterium tubcrousis
Pneumonia
Bacterial or viral infection of the lungs
Lungcancer
Uncontrolled cell growth and development of tumors in the lungs
Seasonal Flu
A viral infection: there are many variations of this virus and it changes rapidly year to year which changes the severity of symptomes
Upper respiratory structures and functions
Nose- nostrills provide opening for entraces and exit of the air
Nasal cavity- hollow space poster to the nose
SInuses- airfilled spaces in the maxillary, frontal ethmoid, and spenoid bones
Pharynx- Aids in producing sounds for speech
Lower respiratory structures and functions
Larynx
trachea
bronchial tree
lungs
Respiratory volumes and capacities
Tidal volume(tv)- volume of air that enters or leaves the lungs doing one cycle; average 500ml
Volume(IRV)- volume of air that can be inhaled in addition to the tidal; average 3,000ml
Expiration reserve volume(erv) volume average is 1,200ml
resdual(RV)- volume average is 1,200
Compare and contrast the mechanism of inspiration and expiration
inspiration
- Requires contraction of several other muscle to enlarge the thoracic cavity even more
expiration-Pressure exercted by the air on all objects in contract with it, force that moves air into the lungs
both are the same of the passive process of elastic recoil of muscles and lung tissue
Layers of the pleurae
visceral pleura- the inner layer
parietal pleura- the outer layer
Volume and Pressure relationships in thoracic cavity
When the intercostal muscles contract, the ribs are elevated
These events expand the thoracic cavity, decreasing its internal pressure.
Internal vs. external respiration
Internal
Requires contraction of several other muscle to enlarge the thoracic cavity even more
External
Pressure exercted by the air on all objects in contract with it, force that moves air into the lungs
Major functions of the respiratory system
The major functions of the respiratory system are that is removes particles from incoming air, regulates temperature and water content of the air, provides vocal sounds, regulates blood pH,and help in sense of smell
