"The Crossover"
Family
Pg: 74 topic: family “Hypertension is genetic” Analysis: Hypertension is when you have high blood pressure and when it is genetic it runs in the family and spreads throughout.
Pg: 63 “Dad takes us to Krispy Kreme, AGAIN” Analysis: This relates to family because they have gone to Krispy Kreme multiple times, and they get told the same story every time.
-
Basketball
-
Pg: 68 “Five seconds left JB lobs the ball I rise like Learjet 7th graders aren't supposed to dunk, but guess what I snatched the ball out of the air & SLAM!” Analysis: This relates to teamwork because JB and Josh are using teamwork to do the action. JB knows that Josh is going to dunk so he passes it to him and Josh makes the bucket.
Teamwork
-
skill
Pg: 60 “Dad takes us to the Rec to practice… I will teach you to focus, he reminds us.”
Analysis: This relates to practice because the dad is teaching them basketball and they are practicing basketball.
Health
Pg: 74 “fainting is a joke, is it?...” “Baby it’s nothing, I just got a little dizzy.”
Analysis: This relates to health because the dad has hypertension (a disease) but he is refusing to go to a doctor. But the only way he can keep good health is by going to the doctors.
Pg: 74 topic: family (health) “Your father didn’t “need” a doctor either.” “He was alive when he was in the hospital.”
Analysis: This also relates to health because the mom is talking about the kids grandpa who also had a problem and that prevented him from staying healthy.
-
Chuck cares for his sons more than anything, he loves them, takes them to anywhere they want. Helps them practice, takes them to practice and pushes them to their greatest potential.
Friends/Teammates
Pg: 67 "Vonide grabs the rebound a fresh 24 on the shot clock."
Analysis: Vondie is a friend of JB's and Josh and he is also their teammate.
"JB goes to the buffet. He brings back three packages of duck sauce and a cup of wonton soup." Analysis: Josh never told JB what he wants. So, JB just already knows what he wants. This shows that JB is not just a brother but also a best friend.
-
Perspective
Pg: 8 "At first I didn't like the name because so many kids made fun of me"
Analysis: Josh first doesn't like his new nickname and neither do kids at his school. But as time goes on his perspective and mind changes about this nickname.
Pg: 38 "My teammates gather around to salut me FILTHY, FILTHY, FILTHY!"
Analysis: When Josh is getting his hair cut in his perspective it was a calamity.

Other Peoples Thoughts
"By the way, why'd you cut your locks? They were kind of cute." (New Girl to Josh, p.69) Teddy: Something as small as cut locks shows how delicate the relationship between JB and Josh is. Nova: Josh is jealous of JB's beginning relationship with Alexis. This is just one more thing that makes Josh mad at JB who cut the locks after winning the bet.
"They were kids, Filthy, just like y'all. The look on their faces after we beat them eleven to nothing was enough for me." Chuck overlooks that their opponents' feeling could be hurt; however, they didn't end up taking the money because of 'the look' on their faces -- defeat and dazed submission Winning and companionship with his sons is most important to Chuck.
Nice dunk...JB and the new girl are sipping sweet tea together" (p.69)
This was the beginning of Josh's jealousy.
“Five seconds left JB lobs the ball I rise like Learjet 7th graders aren't supposed to dunk, but guess what I snatched the ball out of the air & SLAM!” This quote also expresses a degree of vanity and confidence in basketball: Josh knows he excels at basketball, and sometimes this leads to his rubbing it in opponents' and his own brother's face
"Only she's not your friend and she's kissing your brother." (p.117)
Josh was okay witH JB spending time with Ms. Sweet Tea at the beginning, but now jealousy, betrayal & sadness/uselesness frustration takes over and the relationship is strained further.
"In this game of life...on the court." (NEEDS PAGE) You have to push yourself, on the court and off the court.
"Never let anyone lower your goals... and you will shine" (P.66) You shouldn't let others short coming get to you; shoot for your skill and don't let it miss. Don't let others distract you.
Relationship
Josh is jealous of JB's girlfriend and he gets mad when JB does not hangout, talk & walk with him anymore because of his girlfriend
JB and Josh's bond is slowly getting cut thinner and thinner as time goes on, when JB is with his girlfriend
