Ida B. Wells-Barnett
1862-1935
Born into slavery
Became a schoolteacher at the age of 16 because her parents and baby brother died of yellow fever. As a result she became head of her family and raised her 6 siblings
Moved to Memphis and continued teaching, but was run from town upon publishing a pamphlet exposing several cases of the lynching of local black men.
Greatest obstacle: Her desire to see justice for all people. Wherever she moved she would see an injustice and fight it.
Founding mother of the NAACP

Mary McCleod Bethune
1875-1955
Co-founder of Bethune Cookman College
Served Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover in special commissions.
Director of Division of Affairs for the National Youth Administration under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Greatest Obstacle: raising her son after her divorce from Albertus Bethune while opening The Daytona Beach Literary and Industrial School for the Training of Negro Girls.

Sadie Delany
1889-1999
Lived to be 109 years old, and outlived all of her siblings
In 1923, she became the first Black woman to teach Home Economics (Domestic Science) in the NYC Public School System.
Co-wrote and published Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters First 100 Years with her sister Bessie Delany under the guidance of Emily Mann
Greatest obstacle: living without her sister Bessie. Wrote and published On My Own at 107: Reflections of Life Without Bessie.
