L02- things I need to know
Discrimination is based on:
Race= the ethnic group than an individual belongs to, eg. white, asian, black.
Culture= a group of people who share the same ideas, language, dress, beliefs, values and social behaviour.
Disability= a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial impact on a person's ability to do normal daily activities.
Social class= someones economic or educational statues, where people are grouped into hierarchical and social categories.
Age= there can be negative perception of some age groups such as older adults, teenagers
Gender= whether someone is male, female or transgender.
Sexual orientation= examples include gay, lesbian, straight, bisexual and asexual.
Religion= beliefs and values, such as Jewish, Muslim and Catholic.
Types of Discrimination:
Direct Discrimination: involves intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences.
Example: a woman who is told that she did not get a job because she is female is a victim of direct sex discrimination
Indirect Discrimination: when a policy, practice or rules applies to everyone but it has a detrimental effect on some people. The discrimination is accidental or unintentional.
Example: job advertisement stated that male applicants must be clean shaven, this would discriminate against men whose religious beliefs prevent them from shaving their beards.
Types of discriminatory
Abuse: this is a negative and harmful way of behaving towards another individual or a group of people.
Types of abuse:
Physical- causing pain or threatens an individual (causing broken bones or bruising)
Verbal- name calling, insults or swearing to try to humiliate someone or reduce their dignity or security.
Emotional- threats and constant criticism where the aim is to undermine and control the person being abused
Sexual- any type of unwanted sexual contact
Neglect- when a carer fails to care for someone properly. Basic needs for warmth, food, clean clothing are not met.
Prejudice: a negative attitude or dislike of an individual or group, often based on ill- informed personal opinion or inaccurate information.
Stereotyping: making unfair assumptions that people with certain characteristics are the same.
Labeling: assuming that all people of a particular group are the same.
Bullying: behaviour that is threatening, intimidating or negative and is repeated with the aim to physically or psychologically harm.
Impacts on Individuals:
Disempowerment= individuals feel a lack of control in their lives, they just accept whatever happens in order to avoid conflict.
Low self-esteem and low self-confidence= individuals may feel worthless and have self- confidence destroyed.
Poor health and wellbeing= health might deteriorate and may become withdrawn and isolate themselves to avoid situations.
Unfair treatment= may not receive the care they are entitled to and so struggle to manage their daily lives. they could also feel excluded from participating in things.
