What is the purpose of an abstract?
The purpose of an abstract is to provide a short summary of the study
Provides sufficient information to establish if the full report is worth reading
What will a research paper include?
What research method was used
Information about the sample
The aim/hypothesis for the study
Brief detail of what Ps had to do
One sentence of background information
Results including some data
General conclusion in relation to aim
Conclusion in terms of the hypothesis
What is included in the introduction?
Introduce broad area, e.g. memory
Introduce the specific topic to be explored, e.g. capacity of STM
Define key terms, e.g. STM
Briefly describe key theory and/or studies in the area
Statement of aim: 'to investigate the effect of IV on DV'
Statement of hypothesis in one sentence
What is the method?
All apparatus/materials are described and procedure is reported in full detail
Methodological choices such as research design and method of investigation are justified
What is included in the results?
Data presented in tables and/or graphs
Details of descriptive statistics (measures of central tendency and dispersion)
Inferential statistics identified, calculated values and significance level reported
What is included in the reference?
Set out using Harvard Referencing system
Full details of any journal articles or books that are mentioned in the report
What is included in the discussion?
Compare you results to background materials from the introduction section. Are your results similar or different? Discuss why
Say what your findings mean for the way people behave in the real world
Summary of results and brief explanation of what they show
Identify limitations of your study, e.g. stimulus material used, sampling method etc
Relate your results to your hypothesis, have you accepted the hypothesis or rejected it
Suggest constructive ways to improve your study
Suggest an idea for further researched triggered by your study. Perhaps you could change one of the variables (IV or DV)
