NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
They are maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD). Meant for interstate and strategic defence movements. They connect state capitals and other important cities.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed the upgradation of national highways to 4 or 6 lanes. The Golden Quadrilateral connects Dehli, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata by 6 lane super-highways.
The north-south-east-west corridor connects Srinagar in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, Silchar in the east and Porbandar in the west.
