Evolution of Physical Training in Police Academies: Comparing Fitness Variables
Calisthenics Training
Benefits
Saw greatest growth in endurance
Negatives
Not many overall positive changes to physique compared to the other two
Usage
Great overall for longer endurance workouts(Running, long resistance workouts)
Functional Fitness Training (Not really applicable to everyday people since it's police officer oriented training/Combat Training)
Benefits
Agility was increased the most using this method
Although unique, it combines both strength and endurance exercise types and saw the best overall benefits
Negatives
Requires someone to do it with and to teach you how to, since it's a specific type of training
Usage
Those who are looking for a greater anaerobic capacity should do this one
Strength Training
Benefits
Strength gains in the bench press was much higher
Negatives
Can't get the similar endurance increases like in Calisthenics
Usage
Those who are looking for a greater strength should do this one
Important Info to note
"It has been estimated that 80–90% of a police officer’s workday is composed of sedentary behaviors, such as sitting, standing, and slow walking [1]. In a study by Ramsey, the rates of hypertension and being overweight were greater within the police department compared with the general population"
Although from a separate study on how police officers are typically more overweight than general population this study can still coincide with those who don't get much physical activity and what the best option would be for beginners / people trying to get back into shape
"Lastly, given the largely sedentary nature of police activity, focusing on calisthenics or aerobic training may not be as job-specific as initially theorized. Therefore, increasing the intensity and volume of calisthenics and aerobic training in a sedentary population can lead to increased injury risk"
This can apply to other not just police officers, but is interesting to see that bodyweight exercise can lead to more injury than weightlifting since it is technically less resistance on the muscle.
