EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
Repeated measures
-
- 2 conditions: Alcohol + no alcoohol
- All the participants experience both conditions (i.e. they all have both the alcohol + no alcohol test (but not at the same time)
-
Strengths = no participant variables effect results because they are controlled + has economic advantaged because it requires only half the participants in independent groups + matched pairs
-
Independent groups
-
- 2 conditions: Alcohol + no alcohol
- Half the participants are in the 'alcohol' condition + half the participants are in the 'no alcohol' condition
-
Limitations = participant variables (IQ, age, gender) + more participants are required than with repeated measures design
Matched pairs
- Experimenters make 2 groups + try to match each participant to a participant in the other group so that people in condition 1, are similar to people in condition 2 in some key way (e.g. maybe age or gender)
- 2 conditions in our IV: Alcohol + no alcohol
- Half the participants are in the 'alcohol' condition + half the participants are in the 'no alcohol' condition
Key terms
- Participant variables: individual differences shown by every participant e.g. intelligence, motivation, past experience etc
- Demand characteristics: they may guess the aims of the study and act differently
- Order effects: The effects of administering treatments in a particular order e.g. Learning, fatigue, boredom
Counterbalancing
- Split the group of participants in two
- Group 1: each participant does rock followed by classical
- Group 2: each participant does classical followed by rock
- Still repeated measures as they each do both conditions
- Allows us to see if one condition is always better for concentration
-
-
Limitations = time consuming to match participants, more participants required that with other designs
Strengths = no order effects, no demand characteristics, no participant variables
