Columbus set sail on August 3, 1492 with two caravels, La Pinta, and La Niña, as well as a vessel named La Santa Maria, captained by Colon. Two months later, on October 12th, 1492, the explorers landed on an island, present- day Bahamas, which they named San Salvador. Later, they also explored other islands, which they named Fernandina (present day-Cuba) and la Española (present-day Haiti).
