The passivity of girls in subcultures has changed over the last 30-40 years due to them having more freedom. This freedom allows them to be out just as much as their peers (rivals) and means there's very little difference between genders

the subculture of Skateboarders chose not to live completely by the traditional and hegemonic forms of masculinity. For example, the skateboarders emphasized self expression and open participation which differ greatly from the hegemonic values of adult authority and conformity
