COPD
Treatments

-
Oxygen therapy, This gives supplemental oxygen to the body

Short-acting bronchodilators are used to help the patient breathe easier. Their action works by relaxing the lung tissue and widening the bronchi.
Albuterol: used to prevent bronchospasms. albuterol is a beta2-adrenergic agonist bronchodilator. It can be used to treat asthma as well
-
Antihistamines: These work by controlling allergy symptoms but can also dry up secretions and excess mucus which is a common occurrence with COPD

Incidences/Prevalence
-
Since 2020, 5% of adults were diagnosed with COPD (roughly 12.5 million)
-
-
Diagnostics
Pulmonary function tests: this will measure amount of air inhaled and exhaled. This determines how well your lungs are delivering oxygen to your body
-
-
ABG analysis: This test measures how will the lungs are bringing oxygen to the blood and removing CO2
Pathogenesis
Airway inflammation caused by some source (smoking, chemicals, genetics mutations)
-
Emphysema
This is a type disease under the COPD umbrella. Alveoli become inflamed and damaged. This causes them to become less elastic.
"Pink Puffers" This nickname is associated with Emphysema patients because they retain too much CO2 (hypercapnia)
They will often be barrel chested, anxious, and use pursed lip breathing
Chronic Bronchitis
A disease under the COPD umbrella. The lining in airways becomes constantly inflamed and irritated. Often paired with excess mucus.
