Soil
Bulk density
Soil bulk density is the mass of dry soil per
unit volume.
The volume of a soil sample can be controlled
by using a soil auger of known cross-sectional
area and pushing it into the soil to a chosen
depth.
The dry soil mass can be found by weighing
the soil after it has been heated at about 100°
C to constant weight.

Soil Sieves
A dried, crushed soil sample is placed
onto the upper sieve of a vertical series
of sieves that are arranged with finer
and finer sieves further down the
stack.
The stack is shaken mechanical or by
hand so that the soil particles moves
downwards until they reach sieves that
is too fine for them to pass through.
Then content of each sieve is then
weighed and their percentage
contribution to the total is calculated.
