1. USA founded - USA became it's own independent country and expanded significantly past Mississippi river over next 200 years
Main Events of the War:
Battle of Long Island Aug 1776 - British defeated Americans who were pushed out of New York, who retreated south to Pennsylvania
Battle of Trenton and Princeton Dec 1776 - Americans crossed the river Delaware and defeated British at Trenton - followed this up with victory at Princeton (in New Jersey)
Declaration of Independence by Congress, 4 July 1776
Battle of Saratoga Sep 1777 - Americans defeated British, giving them control of New York while capturing 6,000 British troops - France and Spain decide to aid the Americans
Second Continental Congress 1775- 13 governors set up Continental Army to fight Britain and appoint George Washington as commander-in-chief
Winter at Valley Forge 1777 - defeated by British who captured Philadelphia - Americans retreat to Valley Forge for Winter - half of Washington's forces deserted and 2,000 die from disease, however, survivors well trained by Prussian officer
Battle of Bunker Hill 1775 - British Army in Massachusetts fight back and defeat Americans near Boston
Battle of Yorktown 1781 - Americans win major battles in next three years and confine British to New York - eventually force British commander Lord Cornwallis to surrender at Yorktown - America had won the war
Road to War:
1. Intolerable Acts - British pass a bill closing Boston port until the Americans pay for the tea lost in the Boston Tea party - American patriots (nationalist Americans at this time) were further enraged
3. Battle of Lexington and Concord - British Army attempt to intercept weapons being stocked at Concord by the Patriots - Americans ambush them at Lexington and repel them later on at Concord - first shots of the American War of Independence
2. First Continental Congress - 12 of 13 American governors meet and decide not to pay for the lost tea and to oppose any new British taxes or measures
