"How can I eat a healthy diet?
Sustainability in production
May choose not to eat meat due to environmental impact - negative impact to atmosphere with C02 and methane emissions as well contamination to water
Type of packaging may influence purchase as many people would prefer not using plastics as they pose a threat to the environment with amount of petroleum used and leaching of chemicals
Costs
Health foods may be out of my purchasing power - I may not be able to buy fruits and vegetables or more importantly, organic foods
transportation costs from farm to table can negatively impact ability to purchase healthy foods
costs of raw materials such as fertilizers, energy, machinery, land and water may increase costs of healthy farm food
Food may be too costly if economic opportunites are not available to make money for healthy food purchase
Costs of food production and demand for cetain foods will cause some foods to be grown that may not be as healthy but can be made abundantly (wheat, rice)
nutritious
Food production may not produce the most nutritious types of foods due to type of seeds used or type of soil conditions
food waste that can be recycled into the environment
Personal Preferences
personal tastes
cultural preferences
rite of passage for males to eat gizzard (see Abdallah)
Religious celebrations often require certain foods to be prepared (such as lamb during Easter)
confort food like pizza can influence what type of foods a person eats
A persons may not eat cetain healthy foods if they are not pleasing in taste
nostalgia
eating turkey on Thanksgivings Day
Climate change
increased pollution from farming and transporation can influence crop production and nutrients and create negative conditions for the environements - some of which will worsen climate change
climate change may increase temperatures and change the physical location farming can take place due to temperature, water availability or flooding and other natural hazards
Nutrition Education
May not know how to prepare healthy recipes
May not know what foods are healthy for my personal health
May not know what concentrations of healthy foods should be consumed
Research and develpment into nutrition needs and how they might change
Physical and Built Environment
food availability
global community leads to food from around the world - positive in that people are exposed to new foods and cuisines but negative because of transportation effects - especially if using fossil fuels
(airline carbon miles are most damaging)
eating locally grown and in season foods maximizes nutrition as food does not lose nutrients during transport and storage
organic foods may not be available - negative impact
economic influeces in a region create food deserts that determine the type of food available - often negative - healthy foods that don't have a long shelf life may become unavailable
War can play a role as well as corruption and politics as to who gets food and who doesn't
technology
technology
hydroponic farming - expensive startup but good for environment
fertilizers and p
e
sticides
accurate application amount -
positive - healthy plant growth
No excess contaminating water systems and leading to things like algae blooms
over application - negative - leads to soil and water contamination that can impact ecosystems and habitats
mining for phosphorus and nitrogen can damage environment (land use) destroy habitats and pollute air and water with whatever fossil fuels are used for mining.
New ways to package foods to keep nutrients intact
Research and development into technology that enables sustainable farming or GMO foods or better fertilizers will have an initial cost that may be passed to the final consumer
