acribesd status - social positions that are fixed at birth and unchanging over time as the persons is born into the status. It is linked to the caste system
achieved status - social positions that are earned on the basis of personal talent or merit (meritocracy)
Primary data-
- results when the sociologists gets his or her hands dirty by going into the community with a particular research method and persuading a sample of the group that they are.

social mobility - where people change position or status in a starisfication system, moving up or down between layers
social stratification - the way society is structured or divided into hierarchal Strat- or layers- with the most privileged at the top and the least favoured at the bottom. Social class is an example of a straisifcation
vertical segreagation- within the same occupation, women and men tend to be found in jobs at different levels
welfare dependency- the idea that some groups remain in poverty because the welfare state encourages them too depend on overly state provison
