SELMA - CORONER'S OFFICE SCENE
MISE EN SCENE
Grandpa is separated from Jimmy
Bound to the mortal earth
Stark white lighting in this scene
Harsh, unsafe white space
Noticeably different from the rest of the film's darker, sepia lighting
The room with Jimmy is noticeably lighter compared to the one with Pa
Pa is in a place of grieving and doubt, while his boy is in heaven
Far more unwelcoming than the previous warm, sepia black spaces
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Shaky, handheld camera
An uncomfortably intense and unsettling atmosphere
Gives the scene a sense of verite and grounded realism
Long takes
Immerses the audience in the drama, refuses them a chance to look away
An
emotional
response for the audience
A moment for the audience for
emotional catharsis
- they can now cry
MUSIC / SOUND
Melancholic and depressing soundtrack
Space of grieving and loss
Piano music plays after the two finally meet
Moving away from melancholy and into the life of Jimmy
"Help me" + siren sound bridge
Time for action for King
PERFORMANCE
King has our back to us in the first shot
Back to the myth
We already know who he is through the figure and suit -
cultural capital
Pa actd surprised when he sees King
He views King as a saviour, as an icon instead of a man
King is compassionate and lets Pa have his time to breathe
The silence between the two speaks louder than words
Pa struggles to communicate, constantly stuttering with long silences
The death of his grandson combined with being starstruck by King is a lot on his mind
King starts asking questions when Pa gets nervous
A technique that speakers and greatmen use to help the nervous public
SPECTATORSHIP / IDEOLOGY
Aligned with both the man and the myth
King is both the stoic greatman but also the empathetic and emotional human as well
EDITING
Cut to King giving an impassioned speech
Could cut to the protests of outrage, but instead we cut to King giving a speech
Teaching
the audience how to protest like King
