Resources
- Fuel for heating
- Clothing
- Shelter
- Fuel for transport
- Food
Finite - Will run out - Nuclear, Oil, Coal
Renewable - Resources that can be used multiple times and/or are lots of it/accessible
Life Cycle Assessment
-
- Extracting and processing the raw materials needed
- Manufacturing the product and its packaging
- Using the product during its lifetime
- Disposing of the product at the end of its useful life
Improving Sustainability
Sustainable Development - Meeting the needs of present society while not damaging the lives of future generations.
- Reducing the amount of raw materials used
- Reusing products instead of throwing them away
- Recycling products that can't be reused
-
Potable Water
-
Ground Water - Underwater rocks - Must be filtered and sterilised
Salt Water - Sea Water - Must be desalinated - very expensive
Waste Water - Sewage treatment and agricultural systems - Requires lots of treatment
Phytoextraction
- Plants are grown on a low-grade ore
- The plants absorb metal ions through their roots and concentrate these ions in their cells
- The plants are harvested and burnt
- The ash left behind contains metal compounds
Positives - You can use this on bad rock ores and it is sustainable as you are not using fossil fuels, reduces the need to obtain new ore by mining
Negatives - This is a long process as you need to wait for the crops to grow
-
Methods of Desalination
- Distillation - Boiling the water to separate the water to the salt
- Reverse Osmosis - Passing the water through a membrane that only allows water molecules through
These use lots of energy
Treating Waste Water
- Screening
- Sedimentation
- Aerobic/anaerobic digestion
- Released back into environment
Bioleaching
This is a process used by bacteria to break down low grade ores to obtain and extract the ores inside
