Bullying
Schools need a anti-bullying policy. Bullying is a behaviour intended to cause harm or distress. Vulnerability to bullying is described as a result of personal and individual characteistics.
-
Sex/drug Education
Pupils need to be taught taking into account their age and maturity. Including education on relationships focusing on friendship, bullying and self-esteem (Long, 2015, p.5)
Identity and Discrimination If a person is treated differently and less favourably because of, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or disability, they are being discriminated against
Barriers to Learning
It is important to develop multilingual learning environments in school each element of this process interacts with each other leading to a 'virtuous circle' which recognizes and sustains children's learning.
-
Gender
Gender is an important part of children's identity. Children can be strereotyped by gender with expectations. Stereotypes are assumptions made not taking account of children's individuality
As cited in Identity and Discrimination Cable, Wearmouth and Walker
Race/Culture
No child should cast off the language and culture of the home as they cross the school threshold, nor to live and act as though school and home represent two different cultures that have to be kept apart (DES, 1975, p.286)
Children can be seen as outsiders, often left out being perceived as being different. This effectively creates a seperation between 'us' and 'them' (Grove and Zwi, 2006, p. 193).
-
Collaborative
All people at different levels should take a shared and active part in the schools development including pupils voice
As cited in Adults and children working together Stacey, Hancock and Powell
