INFORMAL GROUPS
- Groups that exist primarily for the benefit of their members
Innate drive to bond
- Human being are social animal. Hence, ppl invest time and effort in forming and maintaining social relationship.
Social Entity
- We define ourselves by group membership. We join informal groups bcs it shape and reinforce our self images.
Goal accomplishment
- Ppl join informal groups to accomplish tasks that cannot be achieved by individuals working alone.
Emotional support
- we need ppl to give support during stressful situations.
TEAM DESIGN
- 3 MAIN ELEMENTS DESIGNING AN EFFECTICE TEAM
TASK CHARACTERISTIC
- better when tasks are clear, easy to implement
- share common inputs, process or outcomes
- Task interdependence, need to interact in the process of executing their work or received outcomes such as rewards that are partly determined by the performance of others.
- In short, we can say that the higher the level of task interdependence, the greater the need for teams rather than individuals working alone
Team Size
- Smaller teams are better-so that it is cohesive and can make decisions effectively and speedily.
- But large enough to accomplish task- with the necessary competencies and expertise.
- Large teams- less effective, take more time to coordinate and resolving differences.
Team Composition
- Effective team members must be willing and able to work on the team. Effective team members possess specific competencies 5C's

- A team is effective when its benefits the organization, its member and its own survival.
The meaning of team effectiveness
- it exists to serve organizational purpose
- it relies on the satisfaction and wellbeing of its members (needs fulfillment)
- its ability to survive (to maintain the commitment of its member)

- make better decisions, products and service
- better information sharing
- higher employee motivation/ engagement
- fulfills drive to bond
- closer scrutiny by team members
DISADVANTAGES OF TEAMS
- Individuals better/faster on some tasks
- Process losses - cost on developing and maintaining teams
- Social loafing - the problem that occurs when ppl exert less effort usually perform at a lower level when working in team than working alone
