Have someone walk with a suitcase with a slightly overhead shot, with "past" behind them, and "future" in front, could also use colour splash to signify going from a dreary past to a bright future.
Alternative, could have them looking back at the past to signify not being ready
Isolation
Dual exposure - have a fully fleshed out group, and have someone facing the other way, only partly visible.
Being Alone
Teacher recommended a self portrait where the clicker is in shot, to demonstrate being alone and having noone to help you.
