native americans and the early settlers
native americans
lifestyle
the native americans practice polygamy (men marry more than one wife to get many children for the tribe)
nomadic- the native americans are nomadic which means they dont stay in one place all the time. they do this because they believe nobody can own land because it is sacred. they are also nomadic to follow the buffalo so they never run out of food.
buffalo- Relied on the buffalo for every aspect of their lives. Used every part. Buffalo also sacred and spiritual.
tipis are designed to be warm in the winterand cool in the summer, they are also the natives main place to live since theyre easy to transport from place to place.
government
Chiefs- isn't elected by the people or inherited. their power, their wisdom, spirituality, medicine knowledge and their hunting and warrior skills get them the role of cheif. Being cheif wont guarantee the role for life, and you will not have any real power to tell the Native Americans what to do with their lifes
Councils- a group of people who make important decisions in meetings and they are all men. The council will listen to advice from the medicine man, chiefs and the elders of the tribe. The councils will also not tell people what to do. The council will keep talking until everyone involved agrees on the same opinion.
Warrior Societies- every man in the tribe will belong to one of the warrior societies. They are responsible for supervising the hunting and travelling. They will also protect and prevent attack towards the tribe. Their opinions are important and considered in council meetings.
dog soldiers- a special group of braves. They supervised the villiage move, chose camp sites and ensured that buffalo herds wouldnt be scared away. They also made sure that the right amount of buffalo is killed in each hunt so that they dont run out or the buffalo dont go extinct.
buffalo
hunted buffalo mainly and when they did they would never kill more than they would need, incase they ran out and they never killed females or calves
once they had killed the buffalo, they would bury its heart into the ground, to return part of it back to the earth. This is so they wouldnt be taking something from nature without giving back
