Will nationwide waste sorting solve China’s landfill problem?
problem
next month a giant landfill in China’s northwest will reach capacity more than two decades ahead of schedule
garbage is piled up to 150 meters high in a landfill located in a suburb of Xi'an
in mid 1990 , daily treatment capacity of 2600 tonnes but receives over 10,000 tonnes of waste per day
reaching the maximum capacity at an extremely fast rate
many landfills are soon going to be filled
“It poses us a grave challenge. Besides an increasing urban population, more household waste has been generated in the past decade by economic development and people’s lifestyle changes, such as buying products online and ordering food delivery.”
xi'an is sending all household wastes to the landfill and xi'an has 7 landfill sites and 4 of them will be full soon and the 2 remaining have space for another 2 years of garbage
solution
waste sorting programme
reduce rubbish pollution, water pollution & air pollution to the lowers level
shanghai becoming the first major city to implement it (july)
compulsory to separate their household waste into four types
household food
recyclable
hazardous
residual waste
xi'an has been the latest to introduce waste classification (september 1)
burning the trash
creates toxic gas
causing air pollution
