BOER WAR
CANADIANS DIVIDED OVER CALL TO WAR =
Canada disagreed with itself:
English Canadians - pro-imperialists = suck-ups
French Canadians - anti-imperialists = sassies
LAURIER’S COMPROMISE ON THE BOER WAR = - Laurier said okay, no-one will be forced to go and fight in South Africa, only go if you want - but both sides thought this was a bad deal - Quebec guy even quit in protest
REACTIONS TO CANADIAN TROOPS AT WAR - people in favor of ‘Britain’s’ war were sent off in boats like a bunch of heroes, but the French Canadians chose to stay out of it
BOER WAR = Canada’s first time being in war overseas, and also wanting to be more independent from Britain
-
CANADA & THE US
THE RECIPROCITY DEAL
- Reciprocity is about “turn-taking” and being fair to someone because they are fair to you
- the reciprocity deal between Canada and US would mean they could each sell each other their stuff without a lot of extra taxes (tariffs)
- Liberal Laurier LOST because of his reciprocity idea, and some people from his party, or “team” even crossed over to the other side they were so against his idea!
ALASKA BOUNDARY
DISPUTE
Britain sided with the US over the Alaska-Yukon border, and so pro-imperialists and anti-imperialists in Canada were ALL mad at Britain - and they just wanted to be on their own from Britain now!
