Aquatic Food Production Systems (Anna, Doll, Katrina)
Aquaculture Technology (Bag & Rack; Suspended culture; Pond Systems; Open Net Pens; Recirculating Systems
-
Suspended culture
-
Involves hanging trays, baskets or nets of young oysters from the surface of the water where they can feed non-stop.
Pond system
Water is maintained in an enclosed area by artificially constructed ponds where the aquatic animals such the finfish and shellfish are reared.
Open net pens
Considered a high-risk aquaculture method, since they allow for free exchange between the farm and the surrounding environment. Salmon are typically farmed this way.
Recirculating systems
-
Designed to raise large quantities of fish in relatively small volumes of water by treating the water to remove toxic waste products and then reusing it.
