CHANGES
Childhood
- poor 10-yr-olds already worked while rich 16-yr-olds still “got to” go to school
- then school became mandatory for everyone which was more fair, separate courts for young adults
- children were the cheapest unskilled workers - $3
City Life
- cities became really big and crowded, and became full of working class people and immigrants in less than 100 years
Farm Life
- farming with machines got expensive, so poor people moved to cities for other jobs
Women
- women went from working in their own homes for no pay, to working as domestics and secretaries and phone operators - for money
- women were cheaper than men - $5 instead of $8
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Rich got richer
- wealthy or rich people - owned factories, made a profit, had big houses and big parties - also called employERS
Poor got poorer
- poor people were the "working class" and were made up of people from outside of the city, and immigrants - also called employEES, or unskilled workers
UNIONS
- trade unions were groups of people standing up for for worker’s rights
