Historical Jesus
4 Phases
The First quest
-
Some scholars state that the stories of Jesus may have been over exaggerated like Jesus walking on water was just him walking on the shore with a mist on his feet.
-
No quest

-
David Friedrich Strauss created the book "The life of Christ" which denied that we could find natural explanations for supernatural events in the gospels. He said that the miracle tradition as a whole represented myths and legends that developed over a long period of time
William Wrede showed that the gospels were theologically motivated propaganda. He also claimed that they created the "Messianic Secret" to explain Jesus' un-messianic life
Johannes Weiss said that Jesus was an enlightened liberal social reformer. This claimed that the Kingdom of God was a dramatic end-time intervention to dramatically judge the wicked and deliver the righteous.
Martin Kahler said that the quest to find the historical Jesus was completely mis-guided and doomed to failure. He stated that the image they made of historical Jesus was just scholarly imagination.
Rudolf Bultmann claimed that the gospels were filled in myths. Said that eye witnesses had no role in passing down the traditions of Jesus
Second quest
-
with the negative assumptions still present, this quest did not go much further than Boltmann's no quest time period.
-
Scholar's Sources
The scholars used the historical background like the logistics of Jesus walking on water and the accounts of all people around him along with writings, stories and other historical documents to find the connection between the Bible and history to prove Jesus' life outside of the theology.
-
What criteria is needed to prove the historicity of an action or saying of Jesus as probably historical?

Opinion on True Gospels
After doing this assignment, it is very easy to start questioning your own belief in Jesus and the accounts that have happened in the bible. When thinking about the gospels and their validity, I now question them a little bit more. This is because Mark was essentially the only gospel and was copied off of.This would mean that anything the Mark got incorrect, the other Gospels also got incorrect. This lowers the ability to use each gospel to prove another which makes it rather difficult to fully believe every word that is presented in these gospels.
