Britain won the world war, but lost its largest colonial empire in the world. In a few years, India, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Caribbean colonies became independent. Most of these remained as dominions, that is, with the Queen of England as in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. With the British African colonies, the United Kingdom agreed to transfer command to local leaders, but they did not accept and became independent. South Africa had established a white minority government, system of discrimination and exclusion of black Asians. This situation was condemned around the world and was overcome in the 1990s.
