What are they?
A gerund is a non-finite verb form used to make a verb phrase that can replace a noun phrase. The present participle form is used because it ends in "ing".

Gerunds can follow a preposition or an adjective. Some verbs can also be followed by a gerund or an infinitive without changing the meaning.
How is the present continuous tense formed?
With the verb to be in the present simple "am, is, are" plus the main verb in gerund "verb+ing".
