CAUSES
Total body potassium is low (more excreted, less ingested)
Low intake
High aldosterone
Diuretics increasing Na availability downstream - increases K secretion
Internal balance shift (potassium moves into cells)
Excess insulin
Alkalosis
CONSEQUENCES
Hyperpolarization of muscles
Constipation
Weakness
Cramps
Arrhythmias
DIAGNOSIS
Potassium <3.5mEq/L
TREATMENT
Treat underlying causes
Use K sparing diuretics if needed
K supplementation
