Political factors that helped the spread of the Church
No Imperial Policy
Earliest days of the Church = x general policy designed by Romans on how to deal with the Christians
Persecution = sporadic, localised + short lived
x imperial policy= Christians largely left alone
Share Good News to others -> EC spread
Roman Roads
To expand borders -> move military more effectively around the empire
Others could make use of the roads aswell-> early missionaries could carry the Gospel of Jesus to far off places= EC spread
Roman Borders
Roman Empire= constantly expanding defeating neighbouring nations
Borders gradually being pushed further back with each victory -> travel more freely
Easier to travel to a variety of places-> people carry the gospel + tell othres
Greek Language
Alexander the Great (Greek) ruled first <-Greek Empire before Roman Empire= vast majority spoke Greek
Early missionaries entered a new area they could converse + x language barrier -> everyone could understand the Good News
Pax Romana
Roman Peace -> Roman legal/ judical system had very harsh punsihments <- acted as a derrant to potential criminals
Lead to more peaceful roads + cities
Christians or missionaries= travel throughout the empire with fewer threates <- reduced criminality + potential criminals
Take the Gospel further + share with more people
Conversion of Constantine
First Christian emperor -> converted in AD 312 after the battle of Milvian Bridge
Christians no longer punished by the emperor
Many more peopel converted because Constantine promoted the Christian faith + the Church
