Nile Delta - under threat from rising sea level - without food it produces Egypt faces a lot of hardship - delta one of the most fertile tracts in world - coastal erosion steadily eroding & in some places up 100m a year cos of delta floods - continued erosion partly a result of global warming & rising sea levels - delta is home to 50 million living on 4000 people per km - intergovernmental panel on climate change declared Egypt's delta among top three areas most vulnerable rise in sea level - small temp increase displace millions of Egyptian's from on of most densely populated on Earth - delta stretches out from cairo into 25000km of farmland fed by nile branches - home to 2/3 of countries rapidly growing pop & responsible more than 60% of food supply - about 270km of deltas coastline dangerously low level & 1 meter in sea level wld drown 20% of delta - delta suffering from number of environmental crises e.g. flooding, coastal erosion, salinisation - egypt population of 83million set to increase to more than 110million in next 2 decades - more people in deltas = more cars, higher pop & less land to feed them all on - saltwater is destroying crops - coastal farmland always been threatened by salt water - Nile today hardly reaches end of delta - growing population extracted water supplies upstream - water which does go down stream is highly polluted with toxins and stuff - climate change has had 70% impact of drop in amount of water reaching delta in next 50 years - Egypt's contribution to climate change emissions is 0.5% which is 9times less than each person in the USA - scale of cirses is more people, less land, less water, less food - many now believe future is far away from delta - the Nile delta may become history as a landform and for people who live & work there
