CHAPTER 10 : UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL RELATIONS
1) INTRODUCTION
Interpersonal relationship is basically social associations, connections, or affiliations between two or more people.
Interpersonal relationships can develop in various instances - between immediate family members and relatives, between a child and his parents, between people who work together in organizations or those working in teams.
2) JOHARI WINDOW MODEL
Positive interpersonal relationship starts with trust as a platform to share information and knowledge with other parties.
Understanding and using Johari Window Model modelalso allow us to better understand ourselves as it reduces the tendency for making wrong perceptions in our daily dealings.
JOHARI WINDOW MODEL (cont.)
Open arena
: relates to things known to myself and others. Eg: eye color, person’s height and occupation. Communication is open with minimal defensiveness.
Blind spot:
other people know about me but I don’t know about myself. Eg: A person who gets angry quite easily but sees him/herself as a calm individual.
Hidden area:
I know about myself but other peopledon’t know. Eg: previous bad school or work, bad experience etc
Unknown area:
neither I nor the other person not know about me. Eg: talents, capabilities.
3) LARGE OPEN ARENA
In order to ensure smooth interpersonal relationship and smooth communication, parties involved in the communication need to share all information.
4) FEEDBACK
Feedback is about giving information in a way which encourages the recipient to accept it, reflect on it, learn from it, and hopefully make changes for the better.

5) DISCLOSURE
Disclosing or disclosure happens when a person gives a piece of information willingly.
Advantages of Disclosure
Builds confidence and trust in self
Builds stronger bond with
teammates
A person knows him or herself
better
Disadvantages of Disclosure
Information which is being shared at times may not be well received
Information which is being disclosed and shared especially the negative information, may be used against the person.
